Pipeline natural gas
Pipeline natural gas is defined as a naturally occurring fluid mixture of hydrocarbons (such as methane, ethane, or propane) produced in geological formations beneath the Earth’s surface, which maintains a gaseous state at standard atmospheric temperature and pressure. It is provided by a supplier through a pipeline and must contain 0.5 grains or less of total sulfur per 100 standard cubic feet. Additionally, it must either be composed of at least 70 percent methane by volume or have a gross calorific value between 950 and 1100 Btu per standard cubic foot.
Key Components of the Pipeline Network
Gathering Systems: These are small-diameter, low-pressure pipelines that transport raw natural gas from wellheads to processing plants or larger mainline pipelines.
Processing Plants: Here, natural gas is purified by separating hydrocarbon gas liquids, nonhydrocarbon gases, and water before it enters the mainline transmission system.
Transmission Pipelines: High-pressure interstate and intrastate pipelines transport natural gas from production areas to storage and distribution centers. Compressor stations along these pipelines maintain the flow of gas.

Pipeline gas plays a crucial role in the energy supply chain, providing a reliable source of energy for residential, commercial, and industrial use. The infrastructure not only supports domestic energy needs but also facilitates international energy exports, contributing to energy security and economic stability.
In summary, pipeline gas is a vital component of the energy landscape, enabling efficient transportation and distribution of natural gas across extensive networks.
